We Open Our Online Exhibition Today!

We invite you to enter our exciting online display, look around and be inspired by the history of mental health care in Portsmouth during World War One.

Funded by the Heritage Lottery, our research is about finding stories.  Our group of research volunteers have looked at original patient records and hospital reports from the Borough of Portsmouth Lunatic Asylum. We have explored books, newspaper articles and other research linked to Portsmouth and the Hampshire area. We have made links with other local projects looking at life during that period, and remembering the sacrifices made by many during the Great War.  Our stories are about individual patients or staff, changing attitudes towards mental health care, differences between private and pauper patients, or specific things such as when the hospital was requisitioned by the American Armed Forces.

The stories we found illustrate the social history and context of that period, and the lives and experiences of ordinary people. Through this project we aim to raise awareness generally about the social history of mental health care, to help reduce stigma and discrimination now
